Obituary

UNIONTOWN - Carl Middleton Layman III passed away on July 22, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran and proud American, Carl lived with resilience, loyalty, and an abiding love for his family.

Carl was born on August 2, 1947, in West Virginia to Carl M. Layman II and Margaret Layman. He proudly served his country in the United States Army before earning his undergraduate degree from Kent State University and his law degree from the University of Akron School of Law. Carl began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Summit County, where he had the rare distinction of arguing a case before the United States Supreme Court. He later served as Law Director for both the City of Stow and the Village of Silver Lake.

Approximately 30 years ago, Carl was diagnosed with cancer. Although the cancer was successfully eliminated, the experience changed the course of his life. He left the practice of law and moved to California, where he joined his brother, Michael, in business. Carl went on to embrace life fully. He traveled extensively, enjoyed discovering new places, and developed a deep appreciation for food and wine. He later lived in Florida and Georgia before returning to Northeast Ohio in 2021 to be closer to his family. That decision reflected what mattered most to him. Above all, Carl was a family man. He loved his family deeply, took great pride in his children, and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. Their visits, conversations, accomplishments, and shared moments brought him tremendous happiness. His family will remember his strength, independence, loyalty, and the steady presence he provided throughout their lives.

In recent years, Carl faced continuing health challenges resulting from the treatment he had received decades earlier. He met those challenges with remarkable grace and patience. Even when he required a feeding tube, he continued to find enjoyment in life’s simple pleasures, including cheesecake, which became a favorite and welcome part of his diet.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ann; his children, Sharon (Aaron) Bergman, Brian (Whitney) Layman, Carolyn (Michael) Hall, and Kevin (Tazha) Layman; Ann’s children, Lisa (Michael) Sanders, Alana (Andrew) Carey, and Martin (Heather) Marino; his beloved grandchildren; and his siblings, Michael, David, Melissa and Julia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Carl’s family will honor and remember him privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s honor to the University of Akron School of Law.
