Sugar Bush Knolls

SUGAR BUSH KNOLLS - Carlton Alfred Sears, III, 75, went to be with his Lord and Maker on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, on April 1, 1950, Carlton graduated from Wittenberg University in 1972, having majored in Asian Studies. From there he went on to receive a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. His work in public libraries spanned over 40 years and culminated in directing the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Following that, he worked for some years as a coach with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, bringing service organizations and the people they serve together. Carlton was an able administrator, whose vision and leadership inspired others to reach for excellence alongside him. He believed in community engagement, and volunteered his time and talents in many organizations, including the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, and holding servant-leadership positions in his church.

In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fitness training, and travel, and was always eager to learn new things his entire life. He gave generously of his time and money to causes he believed in, and he prioritized relationships above all. His faith in Jesus, and his love of family and friends, are evidenced by his signature sign-off: Christ-follower, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Woodworker, Friend.

Predeceased by his parents, Carlton A. Sears, Jr. and Jacquelyn, Carlton is survived by his wife, Elaine; his daughters, Meredith Priset (Jared) and Megan LaMarca (Anthony); his grandchildren, Margaret, Elias and Adelaide Priset, as well as his sister, Beatrice Bruce.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
