Claire (Smith) Harrington

STOW - Claire (Smith) Harrington, 80, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Friday, September 30, 2022, at Vitalia Senior Residences in Stow, Ohio. She was surrounded by her family.

She was born on August 13, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, (valedictorian), in 1960, then from Mundelein University in Chicago in 1964. She married George Tone Harrington in 1966, and after living in the Chicago suburbs, they relocated their growing family to Toledo in 1979.

She graduated from the University of Toledo Community and Technical College's registered nursing program in 1983 and worked at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for 25 years as a critical care nurse. She was passionate about her job and was known for her dry sense of humor on shifts. She worked nights but remained a keen volunteer in her children’s daytime activities. She loved travelling and remained active all her life. After retirement, she volunteered with hospice and Toledo Metroparks.

Claire was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George; her parents, Ellen (Clare) and Robert Smith. She is survived by her six children: George, Jr. (Stephanie), Daniel (Chris), Catherine (Donald) Barker, Patrick (Megan), Bethany (Paul), and Matthew; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her brother, Robert A. Smith; sisters, Kathleen Werner, Patricia (Gary) Keen, and Sharon (Andy) Anderson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass is planned for 10:30 AM at Christ the King Catholic Parish, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo, OH 43623, on Saturday, November 19, 2022.
