Cuyahoga Falls — Garnett Shockey departed this life on July 5, 2026. He was born February 11, 1939, in Sharon, PA, to Arney and Edith Shockey.
Garnett graduated from Brookfield High School in 1957 and went on to join the Navy. After completing four years of naval service, he attended Youngstown College (now Youngstown State University), where he earned a bachelor’s degree of Science and Business. He worked for U.S. Steel Corporation as a mainframe computer programmer, supporting a variety of accounting and inventory functions. As the steel industry changed, he transitioned to contract computer programming, serving a variety of clients until his retirement.
Garnett's interests included playing the guitar and mandolin, both of which he taught himself. Bluegrass was his favorite music genre, and he attended many bluegrass festivals, often with his sons alongside him when they were young. He and his sons also loved playing and singing songs together. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Guardians, having attended games back when the team was known as the Indians. An enthusiastic reader, he especially enjoyed books of mystery, crime, and history. He was also known for his jokes and his dedication to working out at the gym.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arney and Edith Shockey, and his wife, Georgieann. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Shockey; his children, Edward (Victor), Wayne (Lori), and Michael (Jessica); his grandchildren, Nathan, Siddhi, Sarah, Marcelo, and Silvana; his sisters, Carol Nisely and Karen Kresovsky; and his brothers, Duane Shockey and Keith Shockey.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Stow Presbyterian Church, 4150 Fishcreek Road, Stow, OH 44224.
