Obituary

STOW - John Edward Hebert III, 83, passed away June 24, 2026.

John was born on September 15, 1942, in Abilene, Texas to John Hebert Jr and Mary Ellen Stauffer Hebert. His dad was in the Army and Abilene was a major military training hub. He grew up in beautiful Lyndhurst, Ohio where he met the love of his life Linda Kemp. They started dating in the 9th grade at Memorial Junior High and were a couple throughout their years at Charles F. Brush High School. In 1979 John was inducted into the Brush Athletic Hall of Fame primarily for being the quarterback on 2 of Brush’s Greater Cleveland Conference Championship Teams. He was voted MVP of the GCC by the conference coaches in 1959. After high school he chose to study Industrial Engineering. For undergrad, he attended the University of Toledo on a football scholarship. He went on to get both his master's and PhD from Purdue University. He and Linda married in the summer of 1964. This August they would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Early in their marriage, they took advantage of an opportunity to move to Buenos Aires, Argentina. John really took to the language and for the rest of his life would whip out Spanish words and phrases when you least expected it. His career as a college professor teaching in the school of business began in 1972 at Florida International University in Miami. In 1976, he moved on to become a professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Next, he accepted a one-year appointment as a Professor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. 1980 brought the family back to Lyndhurst where John and Linda’s children would attend the schools that brought them so many wonderful childhood memories, and he began his 30-year career at the University of Akron.

If you needed help with a move, John was your guy. Having worked for his dad’s office furniture company in the summers, he had experience loading a truck and enjoyed the challenge. He was unpretentious and truly one of those people who is comfortable in their own skin. The son of avid golfers, he developed a love of the game at a young age. Those who played with him will tell you that his love for playing golf was equally rivaled by his love for finding lost balls. He was a ball hawker extraordinaire. If you played the same courses as John, we likely still have some of your lost balls in our basement. Linda, Ted, Joce and Julie extend their heartfelt apologies and appreciation to everyone who’s patience was surely tested during these rounds of golf. As a Cleveland Browns season ticket holder for numerous years, he rode that rollercoaster that is the life of every Cleveland Sports fan. His love of football also called him to be a referee for high school games for many years. While “frugal” in many ways, he was always happy to treat his family to a nice meal out and would reply to thank yous with his signature line, “It’s my pleasure to be spending your inheritance with you.” He was a beloved husband, father and friend and through it all, John, like Frank Sinatra, did it his way.

He is survived by his wife, Linda. Sister CJ Hartland (Bill), Brothers Jeff (Linda), and Jamie (Raidene), sister-in-law Ginny Dienhart. Lifelong best friend Ron Lowy. Children John, Jocelyn and Julie Kerekes (Brian). Grandchildren Zack Triscari, Tommy Kerekes and Brianna Kerekes. And many nieces and nephews.

Over the years, John received so much exceptional care from his doctors and all the important supporting professionals. We hope we expressed our gratitude in the moment to everyone who made such a positive difference in John’s and our lives. Special thanks to the wonderful aides and nurses at Arden Courts in Bath for taking such kind, compassionate, and loving care of John for the final 2 months of his life. We know beyond a doubt that there are angels among us and many of them work in healthcare.

A memorial service will be held at Redmon Funeral Home 3633 Darrow Rd, Stow OH 44224 on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 11AM. Friends and Family may call on Friday, July 17, 2026 from 5-7PM at the funeral home.
