Obituary of Louis Leroy Murie




STOW - Louis Leroy Murie, 90, died Thursday, October 5, 2017, in Stow, Ohio. He was born to Louis Owen Murie and Ruth Mildred Berry Murie January 3, 1927. Lou grew up in Emerson, Mt. Pleasant Township, Jefferson County, Ohio in coal mining country. He attended Ohio University headed for a degree in mine engineering when World War II interrupted his education. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry in Italy. Upon returning home, he married Dorothy Deloresco, and moved to Akron and then Stow, Ohio. He worked as a field engineer for various general contractors. Later, he started Murie Excavating & Grading and branched into general contracting. An entrepreneur, he at one time ran five companies from his complex on Hudson Drive near his home in Stow. He started with a self-storage unit, one of the first in Ohio. He added a Ryder truck rental outlet, a mailing center with package handling and related services, and then a data vault storage operation. At the time of his death, he owned the Hudson Drive Self-Storage Center and the Stow Mail Center. He took great pride in the landscaping of trees and flowers around his home and businesses. He was an active member of the Home Builders Association and numerous other trade associations, and was instrumental in the founding of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.



Lou was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, sisters, Edna Jeannette White and Laura Murie Leafgren, and his brother, Kenneth Murie. He is survived by his eldest brother Richard Murie, and numerous nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly. He had a strong faith and enjoyed life to the fullest until the day he died.



Visitation will be Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 5:00 PM at Redmon Funeral Home, 3633 Darrow Road, Stow 44224, followed by service at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, 4687 Wyoga Lake Road, Cuyahoga Falls 44224 or to the Edna C. Berry Nursing Scholarship Fund at The University of Akron Foundation, clo The Department of Development, Akron, OH 44325-2603.
